Mona Achache (born 18 March 1981) is a French-Moroccan[3] film director, screenwriter, and actress.[4][1][5][6] She wrote and directed the feature films The Hedgehog (2009), Les Gazelles (2014), Valiant Hearts (2021), and Little Girl Blue (2023). She also directed the Netflix documentary The Women and the Murderer (2021). In 2024, she was nominated for the César Award for Best Documentary Film for Little Girl Blue.
Early life
[edit]Achache was born in Paris,[7] France on 18 March 1981.[1] Her mother was French writer and photographer Carole Achache,[8] and her father is French director and screenwriter Jean Achache.[9] She has a brother.[10] Her maternal grandparents were French writer Monique Lange,[8] and French science historian Jean-Jacques Salomon.[11] Her maternal grandmother was born Jewish and later converted to Catholicism.[12][13] Her maternal great-grandfather, Robert Lange, was a French journalist and politician.[14][15] Spanish writer Juan Goytisolo was her maternal step-grandfather.[16][17] Her paternal g

Mona Achache’s mother, Carole Achache, took her own life seven years ago, leaving behind an overwhelmingly rich archive of material from her life, including photographs (she was also a photographer), private audio recordings, home videos, and diary entries. Carole’s mother was the author Monique Lange, a close friend of the French writer Marguerite Duras and part of an intellectual circle characterized by boundlessness and a belief in the liberating power of art and words.
To bring her mother to life, the filmmaker enlists actress Marion Cotillard. Achache herself serves as a sometimes-doubtful orchestrator of this original blend of documentary and biographical portrait. Nevertheless, it is almost eerie to watch Cotillard transform into Carole.
