    Jesse Robredo was born Jesus Manalastas Robredo on May 27, in the City of Naga. Upon graduating from high school, he entered De La Salle University in Manila, where he studied industrial and mechanical engineering. After obtaining his undergraduate degrees, Robredo obtained an MBA from the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City.

    In , Robredo returned to Naga and started working at the Bicol River Basin Development Program. It was there that he met Leni Gerona, who would eventually become his wife. Robredo’s political career took off in , when he was elected mayor of Naga. He served as mayor for three consecutive terms from to ; after a three-year break, Robredo was re-elected and served for three more consecutive terms from to During the break, Robredo became the first mayor in the Philippines to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award in recognition of his achievements.

    After serving as a mayor of Naga for a total of 19 years, Robredo was appointed as secretary of the interior and local government in Benigno Aquino III’s administration (the post previously held by Aquino himself).     Vice President Leni Robredo on Saturday said despite the criticisms hurled at the late former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, history will be the one to give the former leader his due. 

    “The past 5 years have been painful for us because we saw, first hand, how wrongful accusations and disinformation were spewed to diminish his legacy. A lot of people were made to believe them but facts and numbers don’t lie. I have no doubt that history will give him his due,” she said in a post on her personal Facebook account.

    More than being a friend to her family, the Vice President acknowledged Aquino as an example of an ideal public servant.

    “Today, we lay [Noynoy] to rest. Many of us who saw him up close are in grief. He was not just a friend. He was a public servant we all strive to become,” she said.

    Robredo made the remark hours before Aquino’s inurnment.

    In the same post, Robredo looked back at her good memories with the former president.
